Karen Whiston - BHSI, RWYM accredited Coach, UKCC Level 3

Karen is still as enthusiastic and inspired today as she was at 16yo. She gets real satisfaction from helping horse and rider to improve and attain their goals.

From a very young age her ambition was to spend her life training horses.

As a child Karen was an active member of the Weston Harriers Pony Club, enjoying all the local gymkhanas while riding all sorts of ponies, representing the club in mounted games and show jumping, as well as achieving the prestigious Pony Club ‘A’ Test.

As a teenager she enjoyed competing at BS Foxhunter level and at 15 years she backed her first horse which she successfully rode at BE Novice level, winning twice in one season before he was sold.

In her early twenties she became a BHSII and was runner up in the Young Instructor of the Year Award. Starting a successful freelance business teaching, retraining, backing, schooling and competing which she still runs today.

During the late 1980’s Karen was given a horse reported to have ‘no brakes’ after re schooling they successfully competed, being placed at Blenheim International Horse Trial in 1991 and completing the British Open at Gatcombe Park the following year.

Since then she has competed many different horses eventing to advanced level, dressage to medium level and BS to Foxhunter, as well as showing at county level, riding everything from a 13.2hh New Forest/cob to 17hh Warm blood as well as Arabs and Thoroughbreds.

In 1997 her son Jamie was born, so she had no time or resources to compete her own horses however she continued to successfully ride for her clients.

Mid life sent Karen on a quest looking for new ideas and knowledge! She has enjoyed studying other training ideas, learning the techniques of Monty Roberts’, as well as gaining inspiration from Mark Rashid and Andrew McLean among others.

During 2005 Karen met Mary Wanless, which has revolutionised the way she teaches today, enabling her to effectively help riders of all levels to improve and get the best from their horses.
She is now an accredited coach of R.W.Y.M. and helps Mary run jumping courses for coaches.

In 2009 Karen was one of the first to pass the UKCC Level 3 and in October 2011 she became a fully qualified BHSI.

Karen continues to enjoy developing her own knowledge and acquiring new skills, to the benefit of her clients both the rider and horse.
